With consistent snowfall usually lasting until the end of March, visitors can enjoy spring skiing while exploring the vibrant, green valley below. Outdoor thrills, stunning scenery, and a lively local atmosphere, spring in the North Okanagan presents endless opportunities to rejuvenate, play, and discover. Here are seven of the best day trips from Silver Star to enjoy on those well-deserved ârest days,â all within an hour’s drive. Let the adventures begin!
1. Take a Trip To Downtown Vernon
Get immersed in the vibrant arts and culture scene of the city of Vernon, only a 20 minute drive away. Kick off the day at Ratio Coffee & Pastry, a must-visit spot for coffee enthusiasts and breakfast lovers alike. If weather permits, sit on the patio and enjoy their from-scratch food and baked goods. Take a stroll down 30th Avenue to explore boutique shops and specialty stores, where local flavour and one-of-a-kind treasures are waiting to be discovered. When itâs time for a break, take a short walk or drive to Polson Park to unwind in the peaceful Japanese garden. Just on the edge of the park sits the Okanagan Science Centre, perfect for unearthing fascinating facts through interactive exhibits. Browse beautiful pottery and paintings crafted by local artists at the Vernon Community Arts Centre, only a few steps away.Â
2. Soak in the Scenery In the Trails Capital of BC
Kalamalka Provincial Park, located just 8 km (5 miles) south of Vernon, is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, and spring is the ideal time to explore before the summer crowds arrive. Meander through ponderosa pine forests and open grasslands and itâs soon clear why Vernon has earned the title âTrails Capital of BCâ. For a scenic, moderate hike, park at the Red Gate and follow the Parabola, Lookout, and Wall Loop Trail, a 7 km (4.5 mile) route that rewards hikers with stunning views of Kalamalka Lake. For a more laidback day, pack a picnic and head to Twin Bays, where a paved path leads to the quiet shores of Jade and Juniper beaches. Springtime brings fresh blooms and the return of migrating birds, so keep an eye out for wildlifeâitâs not uncommon to spot eagles soaring above the lake or deer grazing along the trails. For those who prefer two wheels, Kalamalka Park boasts an extensive network of cross-country biking trails through the forest, perfect for an adventurous day of exploration if the early season conditions allow.
3. Sip Your Way into Spring
From crisp whites to bold reds, the Okanagan Valley is famous for its diverse wines. Take a day to head south to Lake Country and explore some of the local vineyards. While wine tours are a year-round experience, spring brings a fresh energy as the vines awaken from winter, and visitors can enjoy a more intimate experience without the summer crowds. Not sure where to start? Take a tour with Mojo Wine Tours and Sip Happens Wine Tours, who offer pick-up and drop-off service at Silver Star Village.Â
4. Explore the Waterfront
The famous Okanagan Rail Trail starts in Vernon, transforming what once was a historic route of the old Canadian Pacific Railway into a peaceful pathway perfect for cyclists and walkers alike. This 50 km (30 mile) trail is as flat as it is scenic, making it great for families or those wanting a relaxed ride. Consider renting an e-bike from Kalavida Surf Shop to make the trip even smootherâor just so you can breeze past your friends. The trail stretches all the way to Kelowna, but the stunning views begin right away. With scenic pit stops at beaches along Kalamalka Lake, youâll want to keep cameras at the ready. You might see some locals testing the waters with an early season swim, but donât feel bad if youâd rather just dip your toes in!Â
5. Reach Dizzying Heights
Get the heart pumping with an exhilarating hike at Enderby Cliffs, also known as the Tplagin Trail, located 40 km (25 miles) north of Vernon. Deriving its name from the Splatsin word for cliff, the trail starts gently through farmlands, before entering the forest and eventually ending up atop the cliffs, treating hikers to jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Shuswap River and the surrounding valley. This is a moderately difficult hike with an elevation gain of nearly 2,600 ft (790 m), but is well worth every step. Spring is the ideal time to tackle the trail, allowing explorers to avoid the summer heat and enjoy a less crowded escape. After the climb, treat yourself with a stop in Armstrong. Wild Oak Cafe has quaint vibes and delicious treats, while the Country Bakery serves up some of the best cinnamon buns around.Â
6. Open the GreensÂ
Vernonâs golf courses are nestled in the stunning landscapes of the valley, and the milder spring temperatures in the Interior mean theyâre often among the first to open in British Columbia. Depending on the season, it might be possible to ski, bike, and golf all in the same day! Predator Ridge is a must for serious golfers, while The Rise Golf Course offers dramatic views of Okanagan Lake. After a round of golf, head over to the The Edge Restaurant for a bite to eat and take in the sights from the patio. Or, head back into Vernon and treat yourself to a post-game meal at Cambium Cider Co., a local favourite serving farm-to-table inspired dishes.
7. Escape to Lumby and Mabel Lakeâs Hidden Treasures
Visit the charming village of Lumby, known for its arts, culture, and easy access to nearby provincial parks. Dive into the valleyâs history at the Lumby Museum or refuel at one of the locally-owned restaurants. Jitter Beans Coffee House is consistently good, with homemade quality food and outdoor bistro-style seating. If the weather permits, carry on through Lumby following signs to Mabel Lake, a large lake that stretches for 35 km (21 miles) along the foothills of the Monashee Mountains. Well off the beaten path, Mabel Lake is well known for its calm waters and serene, sandy shoreline, making it a year-round favorite for local fishermen. Enjoy a refreshing early-season swim or hike the interpretive âChanging Rainforestâ trail, a self-guided walk through a maturing forest of western red cedar, hemlock, and Douglas fir.
With so many fantastic things to do, itâs easy to see why spring is the perfect time to explore Silver Star and the surrounding North Okanagan. Whether its taking in breathtaking views on a hike, sipping world-class wine, or simply soaking up the sunshine, thereâs something here for everyone.
